It's slow going at first but it does pick up. I forget when Commander Susan Ivanova comes in but she's a great second-in-command and one of my favorite characters on the show. I do agree that Smallville is probably the most successful superhero television show but you also have to consider that a lot of the other shows were on major networks and their lifespan just wasn't the high depending...
