The New "Slim" XBox 360

Postby Adam » Wed Jun 30, 2010 11:58 am

So I was thinking about upgrading my 3 year old Arcade model 360 to the new 250 Gig "Slim" 360. I am pretty much sold on doing it since the trade in value right now is pretty good at gamestop my only concern is that I just read a story on IGN that the next generation may be coming a little sooner than we think, according to them maybe as early at 2012. Not sure if I want to drop the money or just wait.

Let me make this easy on you. The next generation is NOT coming in 2012. You MAY, MAY see a new Wii by then but I doubt even that. Get the 360 upgrade. Even if a MAJOR surprise hits and a new Xbox comes out in 2012 the current 360 will chug along just fine as a multimedia powerhouse.

Even IF the next generation came in 2012 your facing stuff like high cost systems and all your friends are NOT on the new systems anyway.

Bottom line is Xbox just announced their next system, its called Kinect and Sony is not dumping the PS3 anytime soon, hell they haven't even dumped the PS2 yet.

IGN has to report on that stuff, its the bread and butter. Heck Ken and I have even had the conversation that asked the question, do we ever even NEED a "next" generation?

I guess my concern is that I got royally screwed over when I bought a dreamcast about 2-3 months before they shut down production on the system. Now I know that the 360 doesn't have the same problems that the Dreamcast has but that bad taste has stayed in my mouth. That said the dreamcast was one of the best systems ever!!

I'm in the same boat as you Adam. I'm thinking I'm going to wait until there's a 360slim/kinect bundle and go that route.

Thats a bit more logical, the only thing you risk is the trade in value, that can probably stop at any time. There will probably be (may have even been announced already) a lower priced slim coming, with a smaller drive or something.

The Kinect bundle is a given too.

I haven't heard about a bundle although I am sure there will be one. There have been rumors of a trimed down 199 version in the fall.

I actually thought it was confirmed but since Art seemed unsure in the post before me I didn't want to say that was confirmed and then be wrong and I was way to lazy to go actually check.

My 360 is a little flaky. The drive has issues reading disks at times. So I think I'm going to hold on and get a slim model. I know that the hard drives in the new models are different than the previous ones but are they more standard, like the PS3? If so then I might be the new Arcade slim model and add an HD later. I don't download a lot of content so I could get buy with using a USB drive for storage. Even if I had to partition it.

Reed, I agree with Art's assessment, the 360 is not going away any time soon. Maybe at the tail end of 2013 or 2014. These systems typically come out in November, in limited quantities until several months into the next year.

every once in a while, it seems like the video card in my 360 is going. The rgb channels will pixelate and start to separate and i have to restart. Apparently, this is a sign of an upcoming RROD. i guess i'll maybe wait till a bundle come out, or trade in when the seemingly inevitable happens, whichever comes first. What is the trade in value now?

100 for the system, 30 extra for a 20 gig hard drive.

100 for my console
30 each for my two 20 gig hard drives that I have to swap out when I want different data.
Thats halfway to an XBox Slim, plus I wouldn't have to keep using my laptop as my wi-fi adapter.

Yeah I will probably get myself one for XMas.

I will have to wait and see on Kinect though.

Do they trade in the HDD separate from the system, or do you need one with the system, and the $30 is for a second drive?

I may fix mine as planned, just to eliminate the RRoD, and trade it in on the new one.
