LOD 194 - Avengers Movie Ep.

Hey guys noticed there wasn't a thread for this yet.....

Had to start this thread as this is a really great episode and I want to share my thoughts as I listen.

Rus - You mentioned a Hawkeye / Black Widow movie, around a spy theme. I thought the exact same thing. I even thought that it could possibly be some kind of flash back or prequel looking at the "origin" of Black Widow and the life that Barton apparently saved her from. I would definitely watch this, then again, I would gladly watch Scar Jo, sorry "Mrs From Jersey", stand an read the phone book for two hours.........

Rus - Agree that "Son of Cole" is not dead. Like Jim said, "no body, no dead". Bit too obvious, the way Fury tells Hill that Phil died and then makes a point that "they" needed this catalyst to bring them all together. See also - "The cards were in his locker". Also he is much too loved and too valuable commodity to kill off. :)

Ken - Maria Hill could have been replaced with "Unnamed Female Shield Agent". I felt exactly the same. I no NOTHING about Maria Hill apart from that she exists, but even with that being said there was nothing that really defined her in any way in this movie. Good comment Ken.

Loki's Staff - Don;t know much about the infinity gems but there is pretty clearly something in the top of Loki's staff. Love the idea that this "mind gem" was what was making them all argue. Just another piece of Loki's plan --> He knew that they would take it to study it and that it would most likely be Banner (and Stark) that would be studying it. Thanks for that info guys.

You guys talked about Whedon alum in this film. Whedon had also worked with Jeremy Renner before in Angel. Renner played a vampire that Angel sired during the 19th century.

I agree about Maria Hill, but this is her start in the franchise. Coulson was introduced subtly as well and grew into the SHIELD agent we cared about.

Yeah, Agent Hill will have plenty of time to shine in future movies.

I've been to see it 3 times, and there are still no dull spots. Can't wait for the sequel, so that I can see my favorite comic character shine.

that fact that Loki called Black Widow a "mewling Quim" over here thats slang for erm a certain part of female anatomy. i nearly spat my popcorn out. Did any of you guys pick up on it?

Missed that, but I have only seen it once.

I guess it was during the interrogation scene?

Similar to the end of Brightest Day, there is a scene where John Constantine says "Bollocks!" I've been told that many were quite surprised to see that in an all ages comic.

Now I knew what this one meant, but I didn't know it was at the same level as "The C Word."

After listening to several podcasts that covered the Avengers movie, I gotta admit I feel like the LONELIEST guy in the WORLD! I mean, EVERYONE loved this movie -- from the most uncaring wives to the pickiest of angry fanboys. The only people I've heard had a few issues with it are Frank from HHW and some of the people he saw it with. But the stuff he said he liked ended up being some of the stuff that annoyed me the most.

I know I should give it another chance (mainly because I saw it at the end of what ended up being a LONG day), but I can almost guarantee that it won't be in the theater. Dollar theater, maybe.

Another thing is that I feel I may have enjoyed it more if I knew remotely ANYTHING about the Marvel Universe. Ken, you said that the movie was made in such a way that even people who missed all of the previous movies could come in and understand everything. I can say that even after seeing all of the tied-in movies at least twice each before this, I still left the theater wondering what the heck i just saw. Other than one really long 2 1/2 hour fight scene...

By the way, I'm RARELY the "this movie sucked" guy. I'm actually very forgiving; the fact that I defended the Green Lantern movie for as long as I did should be enough proof of that. But I checked my watch during Avengers so many times, and the fact that 99.9999 percent of the world not only enjoyed it but also embraced it makes me wonder if there's something actually wrong with me! :(

Hey HTH, happy to hear your feedback.

Can you be more specific about the things that you didn't like or didn't understand even in light of seeing the other movies?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! This was the 3rd podcast I listened to about the Avengers movie and the first one where nobody threw a wet blanket over it. I love how you guys paid close attention to the details of the movie and had so much fun watching it and talking about it. I listened to this one show that was hijacked by a guy who acted like he was in a USC film class analyzing Citizen Kane- it was excruciating to listen to. Previously Batman Begins and X-Men First Class were my favorite super hero movies, this one supplanted them both.
