Free Comic Book Day

Postby Hush » Fri May 06, 2011 9:18 pm

I am surprised nobody has made a post about this yet.
I don't know about the other members but I love this day and I look forward to it every year. I get excited like a kid on Christmas. While in Greensboro we are not fortunate enough to have multiple comic shops in our city, it is home to Acme Comics, the largest comic book shop in the Triad area. I love going there on FCBD because of the great activities, the people they invite and they are gracious enough to let their customers have a copy of every FCBD comic, so you leave the store with big bag full of free comics!

I was wondering if there were any issues you guys were looking forward to? How the FCBD occurs in your city or any other stories you could provide!

I know here in Greensboro, since Acme is the largest and pretty much only comic shop, there is always a huge line and every year it seems to just get bigger and bigger. Which is great because it means more people are at least realizing FCBD exists. And it is always nice to have random chats about comics, movies and other topics with the strangers you meet in line.

My girls look forward to this every year. My local shop doesn't do anything big just provides the books. I like the try something you haven't before aspect of it. The girls love the Daddy doesn't go nuts because of the way you're handling the book aspect. And the wife likes the alone time because it just me and my daughters that go.

I love FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! I am excited. Me and my co-host are going to every local comic shop in Dallas-Fort Worth today. We are going to talk with folks and pick up FREE COMICS! Listen for that coverage and our review of Thor on this weekends episode that should be up by Sunday night.

My good friend Tony (of Handi-Cast fame, see ep. 3 for reference) held his first free comic day today as He expanded his shop into comics over that last year. I showed up near his closing time after work and he said it was a rousing success. A lot of parents with kids came in and he did real good business as he paried today with his one year anniversy of opening the new store.

Went to Austin Books today for Free Comic Book Day. It's quite a hike for me to go on a Saturday, but worth it. The place was packed. Austin Books allowed each person 10 books. If you picked up Elric by Chris Roberson to sign that didn't count towards your 10. They had books from this year, years past and some of the recently release $1.00 books from Image, DC, and Marvel for free. Tons to choose from.

Got to talk to Chris Roberson a bit. David Mack was there as well but had a pretty good line of people waiting. There was a stormtooper walking around and some guys selling some awesome shaved ice snow cones. All in all a good day.

I had an enjoyable day at Acme as well. I got there around 9ish and there were about 130 people ahead of me waiting for the 10am opening time.
Picked up the Jimmy Olsen one shot by Nick Spencer, talked with him a little bit and had him sign that and Morning Glories. Also picked up Comic Book Comics by Fred Van Lente, spoke with him about the Taskmaster mini and had him sign that. Nick Spencer was a nice enough guy but it seemed like he did not want to be bothered to talk too much, but Fred was a real nice guy and offered to sign all 5 issues of Comic Book Comics.

I went back again, this time with my lady friend because she wanted to go and I won a Secret Six trade the Reptile Brain. Have not read the Secret Six in a while so I am looking forward to that as well, and of course the bag full of comics I recieved.

So my little family and I ventured out to four stores in the Seattle area for FCBD. Picked up a bunch of books, trades and figures at the various sales. There were also a couple local artists and my son and I picked up 3 sketches:

Hulk by Moritat

Punisher by Greg Scott Bailey

Punisher by Nate Simpson

If you've read Nonplayer, you know Nate has some skill. Gonna to try and nail him down for a full blown commission later but the man is super swamped with Nonplayer.

All in all, a fun little day. Turning into a 'convention' of sort for my oldest, he just loves it!
