Post-Flashpoint Bat-Speculation

Postby nacho » Tue May 31, 2011 9:58 pm

-How many Bat-books?
-Possible creative teams, or ones you'd like to see? (pleasenomorrison,pleasenomorrison,pleasenomorrison...fingers crossed...)
-Really starting from ground zero or a soft reboot, a la the first crisis?
-Which Robin do you think we'll see?

So many questions... DISCUSS!

I am potentially very excited about the digital news, dependent on the details of how they're doing it. If it's a download, where I own the file and am not dependent on their website being up or an app being supported, then I'm in.

The reboot is...well, it depends on what they're doing, exactly. If it's a simple de-aging the main people, cleaning up some convolution, that sort of thing, sure, why not. If Bruce Wayne STILL isn't the one true Batman, I'll be pissed. That's really the only aspect of the DCU I care about.

Funny tweet I saw about this issue: "DC Comics, where slavish adherence to 70+ years of continuity is second only to their desire to ignore it completely." --

No way in hell Morrison's finished with Incorporated--sorry Jon--well, not really, but you get my point--considering that he's always talked about this book having two halves, two seasons: one to set everything up, and one where everything crashes into each other and has been described as a "roller-coaster ride through hell." Apparently that first act is going to end on issue #10 in August, and keep going in September.

As for number of books...I'm thinking all the satellite books might be kept around--Red Robin, Batgirl, etc. We've heard confirmation that Birds of Prey sticking around, but there's going to be a completely new creative team. I can see them snuffing out Batman & Robin in favor of Batman.

I can't imagine that they're going to touch anything continuity wise with Batman, let alone a soft reboot--the Bat-line and the GL line are DC's top-sellers, so it would probably be against their interests to screw up what they have going too terribly much.

As for which Robin...Damian. We're more likely to find out that Superman and Batman have been secret fuck buddies all these years than we are of some of the shit I've heard, like Dick going all the way back to being Robin.

It's obvious that with this new status quo some corners of the DCU will be revamped and played around with...but overall, I don't see any major changes coming out of it for the Bat-verse.

Dick and Damien are going to be merged into Robin, the deadly circus assassin.

But seriously, if there was any time to put Dick somewhere else but in the Cowl, it's now. If, come September, he's still Batman, then that's where he's going to stay. If Batman Inc. is still around, I see no reason for DC to put Dick anywhere else.

Bleedingcool is reporting that there will be a Nightwing title, so it's hard to imagine that being anyone but Dick.

Plus a Babs as Batgirl title. It's about freakin' time. She's rolled around in that chair being a god-like computer whiz for far too long. It'll be interesting to see how they modernize her. But I will miss Stephanie though... she has really grown on me.

If they use Babs and Dick as a mature way to look at super romance, then I'm all for it.

Otherwise, what's the point? Babs in a wheelchair is unique (well, for the DCU; Prof X excepted). Babs in costume? She's just another girl in a cape. And I think Stephanie was actually a more compelling Batgirl than Babs ever was.

I'm happy I got a year's worth of Gail Simone stories for BoP. I knew that wouldn't last forever. But I'll miss her voice for Canary. Nobody writes Canary and Huntress like Simone, and that will be surely missed.

Yeah, I saw that. They haven't announced any creative teams/titles for Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, etc. yet. I assume those will be forthcoming, but let's not bandy about Bleeding Cool as though it's fact. That guy's off-base more than he's on. Not that I care if Birds of Prey is cancelled or gets a new writer.

Here's the full cover for Batman #1, drawn by Greg Capullo, who's taking over art duties for it, apparently:

To get it out of the way--I'm digging the cover. Riddler's question-mark mohawk looks ridiculous, but I'm just hoping that maybe him and some of the other rogues got drunk and made a bet. Anyway.

First thing to notice that it does essentially look like the Incorporated suit with the black bat instead of the oval and some shoulder pads that I'm not quite sure if it works. Also, the villain being punched out by Batman on the top left is DEFINITELY Professor Pyg. More confirmation that Morrison's work will at least still be affecting the book, even if we haven't gotten confirmation that he's continuing...yet.

Apparently some mad geniuses found a way (apparently trying to figure out image urls on their site) to find some covers for more of the Bat-books are set to come out for this. No news on any creative teams, though:

Saw those over on BC this morning. Glad to see that *maybe* March will be back on the Catwoman/Sirens-esque title.

And Nightwing looks like Dick to me.... not some other imposter like Jason or whatnot. This makes me VERY glad to think that "The Reign of the Batmen" is about to be over.

Bruce is the only Batman again, Damien as his Robin, that would make Dick as Nightwing. If thieving is suppose to be younger versions, explaining this is going to be interesting......

Oh, I am SO glad that Damian is still there. :D

I'm just sad that it means it does look like Incorporated will be cancelled before it's time. :(

By the way, anyone notice this in the IGN article? :O
