There's a special episode of the BBC film show this week about movie scores:

If any of you have XM satellite radio (and not Sirius, which I have :x ) be sure to program in the Cinemagic station. As we were driving to dinner tonight, the station was playing the top 10 Steven Speilberg music scores. And from what I heard, they were all John Williams scores making it doubly awesome!

Joe -- Pretty certain it was ranked by film gross, because E.T. was number one over Raiders and Jurassic Park -- Anthrax

Just got an mp3 of the Spider-Man Musical (legally) and I am impressed at how good the music is. I wasn't that impressed by the music when I saw it, and I loved it that's right I loved Turn off the Dark, but the music is surprisingly great.

Hey guys! I heard of TTF through VFTLB, so here's another listener you owe Mike.

Anyway, my favorite scores are:
*Superman Returns
*Batman Mask of the Phantasm
*Batman Beyond Return of the Joker-LOOOOVE IT
*Batman '89
*Sin City
*Iron Man
*Incredible Hulk
*The First Spider-Man film
*Batman the Animated Series- I miss Shirley Walker. I wish she could have done new iconic Superman and Batman movie themes.
*Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi

I definitely watched the 'unrated' DVD edition and it was really good. I watched Batman Beyond irregularly but man that was a good movie.

The score of Sin City was done by Robert Rodriguez, Graeme Revell, and John Debney. Rodriguez composed the theme and most of the tracks. I'd recommend looking it up on YouTube or something.

Return of the Joker- I agree with you, I don't like all of it, but what I do, I love.

Spider-Man- Again, I agree with you, it's not complete gold from beginning to end, but it has solid music, like the theme, not as memorable as Superman's or Batman's,granted, but I really like it, the music that plays when Peter is designing his costume, the music for the big montage of Spidey saving people in the middle of the film, the last track and the end credits.

Batman Mask of the Phantasm, Superman Returns, and Spider-Man 2- I don't know, man. I prefer music that I can listen to on its own, rather than being so tailored to a scene. Expanded scores just have a lot of fat that I can do without.

Incredible Hulk- I'm talking about the 2008 film, I haven't listened to the one for the TV show yet.

Special mention for Catwoman's theme in Batman Returns. Just beautiful.

As for soundtracks, I mostly listen to Disney musicals:

Moulin Rouge-One of the few non-Disney musicals that I love. I can listen to Your Song and All You Need is Love all day, though they a lot of bad memories attached to them now. :-(

Beauty and the Beast-A lot of good memories with this, as we performed this at school last year. I played Cogsworth, and I can't tell you how hard it was to move with a large cardboard box painted like a clock strapped to you.

Tarzan-Takes me back to being a little kid again. :-)

That's about it. Oh, and I have a compilation of different versions of the 60s Spider-Man theme. It's made up of
*The original
*The Ramones cover-Meh.
*Aerosmith cover-Don't like it at all.
*Michael Buble cover-Love it. My favorite version of the theme.
I'm sure I'll find more when I relisten to the old episodes of the Spider-Man Crawlspace.

Edit:Latest scores and soundtracks I've listened to recently
Assassin's Creed 2 by Jesper Kyd-Love this. Captures Renaissance era Italy.
Dissidia:Final Fantasy

(500) Days of Summer soundtrack

Thanks for the greeting! I hope I have fun here.

Scott, have you heard this Batman theme medley? It combines the '89, Shirley Walker, and yes, the Nolan themes in a fantastic arrangement. You can even hear a few instrumental bars from the Adam West series. It made me get goosebumps, I think this is THE Batman theme.

I SHALL KEEP THIS THREAD ALIVE!!!

Great thoughts on this summer movie scores in the Back to the Bins episodes. I have to agree Scott, it's sad to see movie scores heading more and more into the realm of "background noise" than thematic style. What's sad it to think that we have had a TEN YEAR explosion of comic movies and not one score that can even go a few rounds compared to Superman. This summer I think X-Men: First Class has had the best all around score so far; as an album it has the least amount of unremarkable tracks (if any). I was really, really hoping for Green Lantern and I came away disappointed (a few good tracks but NO THEME). I did enjoy the Transformer 3 score quite a bit.

I wish someone would come along and try to emulate John Williams again. Heck rip him off at this point just give me something I can sink my teeth into.

Listened to
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban-Favorite score of the whole series.
Captain America:First Avenger-Rather unremarkable, other than the Star Spangled Man song, which kicks serious ass.
X-Men First Class- Love this. Favorite tracks are First Class, X-Training, Let Battle Commence and X-Men.
