Great show - total memory button material - being of 1968 vintage myself, I felt compelled to comment. Now via the miracle of cut n paste:
Timerider – mostly remember the VHS box cover and a weird Evel Knievel meets the Philadelphia Experiment vibe - nice Double Feature with Knightriders!
Das Boot – 'serious' war movies were not on my radar in 1982. I have also used 'Das Boot' for pun fodder for 30 years.
The Road Warrior - watched it again last night w/Mad Max back to back as a result of this show. I had forgotten how fucking pitch perfect the thing was - barest of plots and balls out action - plus the 'Feral Kid' fucking ruled.
Star Trek II – what can I say? Saw it at a friends B-day party (remember doing that shit?) all the best elements of the TOS cranked to 11. Spock died and a group of 13-14 year old boys desperately seeking masculinity cried like bitches...
Poltergeist – underrated as hell. Was I the only one who laughed like a mental patient at the climatic chaos when corpse buoys are bobbing up n down and the son is screeching and Coach is losing his shit? Clearly, I was a troubled child...
Blade Runner – been a huge PKD fan since I saw this at the theater (it also helped that he did speed and acid everyday until he lost his mind and saw God in a pink beam of light) I always thought the best parts were the mundane bits and shit going on in the background - totally immersive. Sean Young was also crazy hot...I mean crazy...and hot...just like I like 'em.
Megaforce – craptacular - right up there with Metalstorm and that Robert Ginty Mad Max ripoff. They spent more on back cover ads in comics than any other movie I can think of...
The Thing – there are few perfect films in any genre. This is one of them. First DVD I ever bought.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High – considering I still look like Spicoli - I'd say this one had an impact.
First Blood – holy fuck - this is to Rambo what Rocky was to that franchise. Small, well cast, well acted and believable - and used as a springboard for roided out 80s SEQUEL MACHINE INSANITY. I love them all - fuck man, it was the 80s! Let's get juiced and blow some shit up!
Halloween 3 – The song, man...the song! Stuck in my skull forever...though it's not nearly as fucking creepy as 'Save the Earth' from Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster - that one freaked me out as a kid in the theater.
Right there with you on the comics guys - Jim Shooter may or may not have been the Comic Book Antichrist but name me one other EIC that made the trains run on time with the consistent quality of those books - plus, the guy's Avengers run was pretty goddamn spectacular. (Korvac Saga, anyone?)
Musically:
Priest - Screaming
Maiden - Beast
Motorhead - Iron Fist
Scorpions - Blackout
Rush - Signals
Van Halen - Diver Down
Keep up the good work - and by all means, more 80s overviews!
