If you are interested in the Marvel movies, then a few months from now might be a good time to start Marvel. The Marvel NOW! promotion is starting, with a lot of the major players getting their series renumbered and new creative teams, such as Iron Man, Thor, the Avengers, X-Men, and so forth. The current Avengers vs X-Men story is going to have a major shake-up effect on the universe and supposedly it is going to be more in line with the movie styled universe.

Interesting, I will keep an eye out for that. Thanks Luke.

Hi,

Due to many reasons, I just listened to episode #93, the Spider-Man show. And I am commenting on the back to school stuff. My wife is a high school teacher, so we do have to buy a lot of supplies and junk for the classroom. Also, my son is going to school this year(E-Kindergarten). We have a list for that. I am like Scott. I don't see why everything has to be in a big pile for all when we bought the stuff. I think when he goes to Kindergarten next year and beyond, I will put his initials on all that I can. My wife and I have already had arguments about this. She thinks the one pile for all to pull from is OK, but I don't know why others cannot do what is "required" for school or why my child won't be able to use what was bought for him. I also get frustrated with my wife buying so much for the kids to use.

As for the issues, the only one I have read is #400, which came out just before I really started collecting Spider-Man(all titles out at the time). I was able to still get it for cover price about 2 months later. Really enjoyed it.

Denny O'Neil has said Raish and Raz both work.

Also, Electro...ehh, I don't think of him as a major villain, but not lame either. In his first appearance he was just a simple thief so I always thought he just didn't have the motivation to be a big threat. I do agree that he should be a bit more powerful since society and as Paul said, the human body run on electricity.

And Bailey's pick was from 2001, didn't you guys have an agreement to have books from before 1997, or so? Not complaining, though.

Ah yes, the wife is out of town and many a podcast can be cranked out loud in between Les Paul/Marshall outbreaks - another solid outing, gents.

Dig the 3 man booth - still deciding who is in the Howard Cosell role...

The ASM stuff was great - those early 70s ASMs had (IMO) the absolute best Marvel Cliffhanger endings ever - a 'Holy Shit!' moment almost every month.

As far as Electro - always loved him - including the Ditko design - but I always chalked his B List status up to him being fucking stupid. Much like the Sandman - massively powered but dumb as a post.

I've really enjoyed the the last few episodes. I think Paul has been a great addition to the show.

In episode #95, the Marvel Transformers comics were brought up and I would like to mention that besides issue #3 with Spider-Man, the only other major references to the Marvel Universe proper was a couple appearances of the Savage Land. I believe issue #8 was the last one where it was mentioned.

Enjoyed the Rob Liefeld discussion in the latest episode (#97), if only because it's a subject you rarely hear a balanced debate on (on the interwebs, anyway).

At the risk of forever damaging my own reputation on the subject of comic art, I have to admit that I too am partial to a bit of Liefeld from time to time. I'm certainly not blind to the man's (many) artistic failings, but I think you guys hit it on the head what the appeal of his art is with two words "energy" and "enthusiasm." In particular, I am fond of his work from New Mutants #98-100. I'll admit some of that is probably nostalgia due to the fact that I read it when I was about 13 when I first read it, and didn't know no better. But whenever I look at Liefeld's work from that period, I just get sucked in by that sense of energy and enthusiasm (and then I laugh at all the stuff-ups like the disappearing blades on Shatterstar's swords ...).

I definitely agree that he was someone who got too successful too quickly, and that was probably detrimental to his development. Also, the fact that he got rich off the back of the success of X-Force meant he didn't have to draw comics regularly any more. And you can only improve as an artist by drawing regularly.

One other point I wanted to bring up about this one - Mike said it was in James Robinson's run that it was revealed Cap was put on ice due to his objection to dropping the Hiroshima bomb. This was actually revealed during the Loeb / Liefeld run - in issue #3 to be precise (here is a neat Peter David column where he reacts to the issue: ).

B2TB#98 was amazing. Thank you Michael and Andrew for an awesome Hulk tribute show.
I came across this article today and couldn't help but be reminded of the Hulk episode:

Thanks very much. It was very much a labour of love for both of us this episode so it's gratifying you enjoyed it. Mike did an excellent job in the edit.

Thanks Scott and Rob. Much appreciated. There's a always a worry when you do a show like this that nobody else will be interested. One of the fact's we did mention that got lost somewhere is that in the episode Married, David rather foolishly gets married under his own name! Given his "believed to be dead" status this always struck me as a bit odd and I would have liked it if this is how McGee ultimately tracked him down.

Glad your digging it though. Hope you all like our next multi hour chat that is awaiting release....

(I'm such a tease!)

Finished the episode and thoroughly enjoyed it. What surprised me is that I guess I do actually remember more of this show than I thought I did because your discussion really brought back some memories for me. There are definitely episodes I need to watch or rewatch.

I never did see "The Death of...". I'm glad I didn't. You confirmed everything I've ever heard about it. Glad you didn't totally rip on "The Return of...", too, as I really dig that movie. Sure it's not "really" Thor, but, as you guys said, the actor is just so damned likeable in that episode that you can't help but find yourself enjoying it.

I would take some exception, though, about your remarks regarding "The Trial of...". Keeping in mind that I haven't seen it in years, I dug the hell out of that movie. I thought Daredevil was awesome and I really enjoyed Rhys-Davies as the over-the-top Kingpin.

I wish Michael would lay off his constant bashing of the "Can You Read My Mind" sequence from S:TM, but that's a conversation for another time. I dig it, what can I say?

Lastly, you guys mentioned the Hulk showing up on "The Fallguy". Did you know he also showed up on "Amazing Stories"? I couldn't tell you the episode, but I was on a watch-through of that series some time ago and he was definitely in an episode that had something or other to do with a guy obsessed with television programs.

Excellent episode, fellas.

it sucks that the Hulk show, along with many other classics that we grew up watching, either first run or in syndication aren't on any cable station (as far as I know). I know Hulk used to be on Sy Fy (when it was Sci Fi), but that was years ago.

Even Star Trek, which i discovered in reruns on WPIX/11 is only on one station, ME TV, which my cable just got last month, and its only on once a week on Saturday nights. they're showing the remastered ones with the new effects.

Don't know if its a rights issues with these shows or what, but it would be great to flip channels and rediscover many shows like these.

Season 1-3 of the Incredible Hulk are on Hulu in fact..

It is a weird sensation to be in the middle of a great transition period where I have gone from scouring tv stations on a crappy turn the dial small tv to vhs tapes to a cble tv and dvd sets all the way to being able to just go to a site and watch the entire spectrum of my tv growing up periods on a computer monitor for free.
