"In 2015, we're planning to release Star Wars Episode 7 – the first feature film under the "Disney-Lucasfilm" brand. That will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 – and our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years."

Lucas will only be a "creative consultant" on the new films.

Lucas: "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime."

First reaction (beyond "have I slipped through a timewarp and this is April 1?") is that this has a huge potential to dilute the franchise. Who do we think they will get to make the new films? Will they be knocking on Peter Jackson's door ...? How about Spielberg?

Also, what does this mean for potential future Indy movies - no mention of plans on that front.

Wow!

One more thought - you've got to assume the Star Wars comics licence is heading back to Marvel once Dark Horse's current term is up. That's really gonna hurt DH's profit margin ...

Edited to add:

There's a statement on the subject from DH's Mike Richardson on Newsarama - "Dark Horse and LucasFilm have a strong partnership which spans over 20 years, and has produced multiple characters and story lines which are now part of the Star Wars lore. Star Wars will be with us for the near future. Obviously, this deal changes the landscape, so we'll all have to see what it means for the future."

... which doesn't really say anything much ... worth keeping in mind how quickly Disney moved the Pixar and Muppets licences from Boom! to Marvel after they bought it.

Also, unless Episode VII is subtitled "Heir To The Empire," whole swathes of the Expanded Universe are going to no longer be valid.

Unless, I suppose, they set it several hundred years beyond ROTJ, which is possible!

Shia LeBeauf as Jacen Solo !

if marvel gets the rights to SW comics, they should pick it up with issue 108 ! like what IDW has done with Transformers and GI Joe. what are Jo Duffy and Cynthia Martin up to ?

Hey, I wonder if they might get Joss Whedon to do one of the films ...? (Obviously not Ep VII cos he's working on Avengers 2 to come out at the same time ...)

Bleeding Cool is reporting that Fox still holds the distribution rights to the first 6 movies, so I guess the fanfare will be staying put on them, at least.

Some excellent points raised in the show and speculation in what exactly episode VII is (and I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY with Chris - it needs to Episode VII) will no doubt be rampant over the next year. I disagree with any course of action that has the original characters in. This isn't Star Wars for our generation - it's Star Wars for the next generation although I do agree that a Skywalker has to in the mix somewhere. In addition the last thing Disney want to do is piss off a substantial portion of the fanbase by annexing the EU (although I don't believe that that would have any impact on the Box Office for episode VII if they did jettison all that stuff). With all that in mind, here's what I'd do...

A Long Time Ago In A Galaxy Far, Far Away...

STAR WARS
Episode VII
The Last Jedi

It is a period of Galactic Peace. For over 10 generations since the Fall of the Galactic Empire, the Galaxy, under the watch of the noble and selfless New Jedi Order have known no wars, no conflict.

However, a small group of insurrectionists, loyal to the teachings of Senator Palpatine are starting to make waves throughout the Galaxy. Their belief that the New Jedi Order is based on lies and corruption is taking hold. They are learned in the ways of the Dark Side of the Force and ruthless in their beliefs and actions.

The New Jedi Order however, hasn’t taught the force in decades and used it even less. Their only hope in combating this new evil is the last, true force sensitive born to The Order and descendant of the revered Luke Skywalker. Locating The Last Jedi will be no easy task. Convincing her she is the last hope for maintaining freedom in the Galaxy - even harder..
.

This way we have our cake (this doesn't piss on any EU stuff. All that still happened) and eat it (there are enough thematic similarities to the original and prequel trilogies for us to have some fun). We also have a choice of the age of the Last Jedi - if we want her to be 19 like Luke and Leia that works and gives us another similarity to play off. If we make her older, like Obi-Wan, we can introduce a batch of new characters that she can train and that get swept up in the adventure.

One thing - NO CUTE NODS TO THE OLD FILMS. None! This trilogy stands or falls on its own two feet. If it fails we haven't done anything that ruins the old movies or the books, comics and cartoons from that era. If it works we get a whole new era to make books, cartoons and comics about.

So. What would YOU do?

Andy
VERY EXCITED!

I got the scoop! it sounds like they're going with Wilford Brimley's character from that one special becoming a sith lord. Thats all I know right now, but as soon as I hear more I'll update everyone! Stay tuned...

Unless they use some kind of digital trickery like what was used for Jeff Bridges in Tron (rather badly) there is no way Mark Hamill can pull off an heir to the empire storyline. I hope they avoid the EU completely.
