We got the Sega Genesis the first year it was out, Christmas 1989. We were almost always "early adopters" and this was no exception. We got the Power Base Converter, which allowed it to play all of the Master System games as well. This system raised the bar as far as I was concerned. Because while the SMS could do arcade adaptions, the Genesis hardware was capable of reproducing straight arcade games. And it did it with panache! We got a pile of games, including almost all of the launch titles, and my brother and I logged hours and hours and hours on the Genesis. That thing was a WORKHORSE and it worked hard for YEARS, it was the machine of choice for us until I got the Saturn and that was in 1995.
Some of my favorites include:
Golden Axe -- Sega's original "Killer App" as far as I am concerned. See what I said above about reproducing straight arcade games? Look no further. In fact this one had two extra levels than the arcade. Insanely awesome hack and slash game.
Ghouls n Ghosts -- I played the ever living hell out of this game, still come back to it for its simple charm.
Revenge of Shinobi -- One of the best platform games ever made. Period.
Herzog Zwei -- The ORIGINAL RTS game, baby. Took me forever to figure it out but once I did I was addicted. I used to play two player by myself sometimes and set up massive battles back and forth. Like a war simulator!
Moonwalker -- Nevermind the Michael Jackson stuff, this was a very fun and nicely balanced platformer with an emphasis on exploration.
Target: Earth -- The first "mech" game I ever played totally fun, although it is HARD AS HELL.
Bimini Run -- Crazy run 'n' gun game which is best as a two player co-op where one player drives and one fires the gun. My brother and I were all over this game. "Kenji, come in!"
Sonic The Hedgehog -- when this game came out, it was a HUGE DEAL and it delivered. AWESOME game all around and changed the dynamic of the Sega/Nintendo rivalry.
Decap Attack -- OH MY GOD. This may be my favorite 16 bit game of all time. I even wrote a about it. Crazy story, awesome graphics, fun gameplay, great level design... this game had it all as far as I am concerned.
Starflight -- I played this game for hours and hours on end, trying to find the Black Eggs... totally freeflight space game which is the closest thing to a Star Trek style game I have ever played.
Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday -- The first "real" RPG I ever played, I just enjoyed the heck out of this classic scifi game. You have to love a game where you end up visiting nearly all the planets in the Sol system.
Streets of Rage -- Oh jeez, what a great beat-em up. I don't even know what I can say about this game except that if you want a brawler this is where I go first.
Desert Strike / Jungle Strike -- EA's classic chopper games. Never beat either of these games but had a blast trying!
X-Men - This game was a BIG DEAL when it came out and it still has one of the nastiest tricks ever -- when you have to RESET the computer in Mojoworld by... pressing Reset on the Genesis. WTF?!!!
Street Fighter 2 Special Championship Edition -- Oh my God this game had a huge amount of hype when it came out and it delivered. And it was the Championship Edition when the only one (at the time) on the SNES was the regular one. Mwuahahaha!
The EA Sports Games -- NHL Hockey, John Madden Football, NBA VS/Showtime/Live, Bill Walsh College Football, FIFA Soccer, Rugby World Cup, World Series Baseball... the list goes on and on. My brother and I would play at least one of these every day. I kid you not. We were freaking addicited to these games and they all delivered.
I still have my Genesis, and it is still in great shape. My collection of games is pretty impressive too, we really were lucky with the amount of games we had. Best video game system EVER.
This is a great Genesis site if you want a trip down memory lane:
