Ok I just read the issue and no I feel I can make a more informed opinion.
The opening story with the multiple Doomsdays and omnipotent Luthor was incomprehensible to me, it was just warmed over Alan Moore cosmic gobbldygook and probably made more sense if I followed the story.
The second short Krypton story was very nice, just an interesting addition to the last days of Krypton, kind of a mood piece.
The Paul Dini story with the hippo god-thing is cute and nicely drawn. Nothing to write home about.
The Geoff Johns one is fluff-o-rama for three or four pages.
Then comes the Goyer story. Yup, like I suspected, it shows everything that goes wrong when you try to integrate Superman into the "real world". YES, the general IDEA of the story is plausible if Superman was "real", but only on the surface. What I found most offensive were the US snipers aiming Kryptonite bullets at him. *Ahem* "Faster than a speeding bullet"?
This "realistic" story ends with Superman remembering a protester and Iranian cop having a moment as a flower was passed between them. So much for realism. Meh.
THEN, just to nail it home, Richard Donner's screenplay and accompanying storyboard show EXACTLY what I want to see and in the vein I'd like to see it. Good natured adventure with fun character interaction and a bit of danger. FUN!

That Lindelof story actually bugs the heck out of me, too, because now Jor-El has outsourced the work of designing the rocket that takes baby Kal-El to Earth. If Jor-El can't even design the dang spaceship, what's the use of him? No one listens to his warnings, and he's too dumb to do anything about it to save his kid? Ugh. Ugh ugh ugh.

Chris, would you believe that the lead story was actually the conjoining of two seperate stories? Action Comics has featured Lex Luthor as the lead for about a year now, on his quest to regain the ultimate power he briefly held in Blackest Night. The Doomsday story started out in a Steel one-shot, then crossed over into Outsiders, Justice League of America, Superman/Batman, and then Superboy before landing in Action. (Each book featured one of the Death and Return of Superman characters -- Steel in his one-shot, Eradicator in Outsiders, Cyborg Superman in JLA and Superman/Batman, and then Superboy.)

I don't know the details of the Lex Luthor story but the Doomsday one was spelled out pretty plainly -- Doomsday attacked and kidnapped each of the "S" shield wearing folks, displaying different powers each time. Only in this issue did we learn that Lex was involved.

The Doomsday stuff has been fantastic smashing and bashing fun. The Lex stuff, I have no opinion since I did not read it, but I found the elements in this issue easy enough to follow.

The "Sweet Moment" you refer to makes me think of the opening credits of Watchmen, when the protester puts the flower in the barrel of the National Guardsman's gun -- and then they open fire. Would have been more "realistic" for sure.

Really glad I don't buy single issues nowadays after reading about all of this.

Well, for what it's worth, the Doomsday story has been kickass. And there has not been anything in there to really stand out as it not being during the FCTC era -- assuming you cross your eyes at Supergirl and pretend she is the Matrix version. :)
