I have not seen much of DS9. It was getting started sort of as I was leaving Trek a little bit with the end of TNG. And even though I watched Voyager I never got into DS9 by that point because every time I tried to watch it was like I was missing something.

The opening theme I thought was very nice, a real change of pace from what had come before.

Listening to the Buck Rogers score now (much love, APLUK) and digging it. I love the title track, very late 70s AM radio singer-songwriter. But the score itself is very earnestly science fiction and there is always something fresh about that.

Right on both counts, Scott. ENT really could have used a symphonic theme; and the opening sequence to the Mirror episodes rocked! Watching the regular opening sequence again with the "From the Earth to the Moon" music was nice -- it doesn't quite work, but it's close, and it is a lot better than "Faith of the Heart" or whatever it was called. (If they had to use a pop song, at least they could have tried to write and record a new one!) The ENT montage is probably, visually speaking, my favorite of all the series -- especially the shot of the orbiter Enterprise rolling out, what a great meta-geek out moment! -- it is such a shame it didn't have a proper score.

Maybe you're on to something there ... FTETTM was in 1998 and ENT premiered in 2001, but surely FTETTM wasn't the first to do a montage like that, either. Oh, well, what might have been...

Right now on my Nano I have:
The Dark Knight - Hans Zimmer
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 1 - Alxandre Desplat
Inception - Hans Zimmer
Superman Returns - John Ottman
TRON: Legacy - Daft Punk
True Grit - Carter Burwell

I went through a score phase in college and have a ton more in my music library but this is what I've been listening to recently.

I saw LaLa Land has put out a four disc X-Files set and an eight disc Medal of Honor (videogame series) set I may need to get. The X-Files was my favorite show as a kid and Michael Giaccano (sp?) did half of the Medal of Honor stuff so I may try and track it down.

Ok, apparently Desplat from Harry Potter also scored The King's Speech. Haven't seen it yet, how is the music?

I didn't notice Desplat's score, just the piece of classical music that underscored the speech of the title. It was awesome, and now I can't remember what it was called!

I want to get ahold of the Tron Legacy score. In my eclectic tastes, I dig Daft Punk and I have a soft spot for soundtracks which are non-traditional.

Speaking of which, some of the best film scores out there are by the Italian rock band Goblin -- their collaborations with Dario Argento have produced some of the most memorably different horror music I have ever heard. Some to check out:

Profondo Rosso (Deep Red)
Susperia
Tenebre
Zombi (Dawn Of The Dead)
Non Ho Sonno (Sleepless)
Phenomena (Creepers)

Just got the expanded ALIEN, ALIENS and the new THOR score. Looking forward to checking them out.

I have those as well. I've always been a big fan of Horner's ALIENS score. Particularly the expanded version. I have the expanded ALIEN by Goldsmith, but can't say as I've ever really given it much of a listen. I don't have any real attachment to that film to speak of, so I just haven't made the time. And the new THOR score seems kinda bland to me, but maybe I'll like it better after seeing the film.

Speaking of Scores, what are you all's thoughts on STAR TREK IV's score? It's not a bad score per se but it's not a great STAR TREK score.

So I really loved Thor, and when I got home I bought the soundtrack on a whim (oh the curse of being able to download straight to my iPod from that iTunes store). Overall, I think the score is pretty weak outside of the film. I am going to give it another listen before I pass final judgement, but for now I just isn't that outstanding. It got me thinking - maybe for a soundtrack themed episode of TTF, you guys could do a Summer Movie preview score episode looking forward to the upcoming scores.

Another thought - do you guys find yourselves listening to scores for movies you don't like/haven't seen? As I gravitate away from contemporary music and find myself listening to more and more scores I find myself searching for new scores more often. But I can't really seem to groove on a score unless it's one of my favorite films. I feel like I my be limiting myself from finding some great music, yet what seems to really hook me on a good score is that "musical memory" of the film/show/game. Anyone else like this? Or am I just a score lover wannabe?
