Glad to hear you enjoyed the swag guys. And I'm very glad to hear some of it is heading to Chris as well. I got the Enterprise blueprints from my uncle who bought them new. Sorry they are not all in there, my uncle hung some of them in his room back in the day and they did not survive the years. I have found all of them online so I will have to send them to you in digital form.

About the last movie and Kyle.

He's in it....sort of. In that the son of James Doohan (Christopher Doohan I think) on his twitter account said that his unnamed in the film role as a Lt. Commander that helps in the Transporter room is Kyle. It's just his word, but nothing about it is disagreed with in the film.

Scott, the reason the actors weren't allowed to show four fingers on the telly was probably so the T.V. shows could be sold to Japan. In Japan people (including cartoon characters) aren't allowed to show that they have four fingers due to people with four fingers being considered lower class and showing someone four fingers on one of your hands is an insult (similar to giving the finger in Western culture) calling that person low-class. Because of this many American cartoon characters are edited to have a fifth finger on each hand.
If anyone knows an American BS&P reason for not showing four fingers let me know.

To be fair I completely forgot Scott had mentioned M*A*S*H* but I don't see why it couldn't be broadcast in Japan but then I've only ever seen a handful of episodes so that's probably why I'm missing what's obvious to you.
I'm not sure about television in the 60's but I know that T.V. writers, producers etc. want their shows to be sold to other countries as that will increase their profits, case in point the recent Captain America movie: He wasn't fighting Nazis in WWII because movies in Germany aren;'t allowed to show Swastikas. The hand thing is just something they can keep in the back of their mind while filming, it doesn't effect who they hire to play the role (Since they still hired Jimmy Doohan), it doesn't effect the plots and it's not very noticeable (or at least I've never noticed it and I know it's been mentioned before on TTF).
Of course it may have nothing to do with BS&P and may simply be the actors were self conscious about their lack of digits and asked if they could be filmed in such a way that didn't call attention to the fact.

The song at the end of this week's episode was very good. Very Prog Rock!

Kudos.

With the mention of shows not being able to be aired in Japan due to them having less than the regular five fingers, I wonder if shows like The Simpsons and Futurama would get airplay, or if they would be reanimated to show the characters with five fingers? Or if hand gestures were just edited out of the show?

Joe -- And is the negative stereotype only relegated to Japan? Because if it is an Asian cultural faux pas, why would the animation studio (which is located in Korea) be animating it that way? -- Anthrax

I can't stop laughing at Scott's deaf jokes. The first time he got Chris with it - priceless.

The Star Trek Monthly Monday Thread

Postby JonathanCrites » Thu Mar 15, 2012 11:58 pm

I vaguely remember reading that the Motion Picture was based on a combination of pre-existing stories - was The Doomsday Machine one of them? The unstoppable force and Decker making a sacrifice both echoed tMP to me.
