The COMICS MONTHLY MONDAY THREAD

Sprung from the painfully embarrassingly titled "Giant Sized Man-Thing" - it's HOWARD THE DUCK! Chris Honeywell and Johnny Bueno talk turkey about everyone's favorite fowl trapped in a world he never made! The Duck's career is addressed in overview with particular attention on the once coveted premier issue! Of course the conversation wanders into weird territory and Al Goldstein and Larry Flynt end up turning up! THEN- WHO'S THIS? IT'S THE LEGENDARY SCOTT GARDNER! This month, Scott Takes Johnny's place as our COMIC SHOP CORRESPONDENT and reviews a slew of comic shops he has visited in his new Florida digs!
He and Chris also shout out to all the different countries that have downloaded Two True Freaks! The United States was number one - but you won't believe which country is number two in Freak downloads! LISTEN AND FIND OUT!

I am actually very mad at myself... I saw a copy of Essential Howard The Duck at the used book store on Friday. Went back today and it was gone. Dagnabitall!

That was one heck of a great, tangent filled episode. I can see the kind of subversive nature that Howard the Duck tried to tap into be compared to the more underground work brought forth in the pages and covers of Screw and Hustler magazine. And the fact that a mainstream publisher like Marvel would be able to get away with that is just awesome. And with the Disney buyout, I wonder if anything like that could be done again.

Also Chris, thanks for the mention of Jack Horkheimer's passing. As a kid growing up in a small town in Oklahoma (#5 on the D/L list...REPRESENT!!!), I was a HUGE sci-fi fan. But since I didn't get any of the UHF stations that would broadcast the syndicated episodes of Star Trek, my sci-fi hunger was sated with Saturday evening PBS viewings of Doctor Who (Tom Baker was my Doctor, and yes, I called him "Doctor Who" as well). And inbetween that and Monty Python's Flying Circus, they used to do the Star Gazer segments. It was a great way to get young minds who were interested in what was going on out there to get out and actually take a look at the night skies. And they were short and to the point, and didn't require an elaborate set-up to see the astronomical events he described in the shows. Educational and entertaining!

Joe -- I would think an Adult Swim animated version of Howard the Duck would be just about perfect -- Anthrax

Chris, I would love to sit in on the Destroyer Duck talk if/when it happens because I wonder if Jack knows about the great little revenge switcheroo that Gerber pulled on Marvel in the unofficial crossover between Howard and Destroyer Ducks.

After this episode, I really think I need to procure some Howard stories. mY only familiarity with the character was the Film and Commodore 64 game based on said film. That game was fun though.

This was a fun episode. Howard the duck is one of those series that I've wanted to get into for years, but haven't actively searched for the back issues. I had the Essential when it came out, but I never got a chance to finish reading it before I sold it. I need to look for my scans to start again.
I haven't seen the movie in about twenty years, but I want to check it out again. It was on some movie channel recently, but missed it. I didn't like the design of Howard in the movie. I thought it was too plain or generic, most likely due to the restrictions of having an actor in a suit to play the character.
When Stan Winston passed away, there were articles online that had pictures of his workshop and the many creatures he had created over the years. The one that surprised me the most was the unused designs for the Howard the Duck Movie. Most likely these would have been puppets, instead of suits, due to the much more expressive look of them. Here's a link to one of the articles. http://www.chud.com/articles/articles/1 ... Page2.html. Anyways, thanks for the great show.

Man, i really thought you'd like the movie, man. That's why i kinda hyped it up to you during the Indiana Jones episode of TTF. Were ya baked off your ass? I thought that'd make it more enjoyable for ya.

Saw a copy of HTD on VHS for 50 cents at a yard sale this weekend. Seriously considered picking it up just for fun, but didn't.

Listening to this podcast made me really, really, REALLY regret not buying that Howard Essential, even moreso than I did earlier in this thread. ARRGH!

The problem with remaking Howard The Duck nowadays is that there is enough bad blood in Hollywood still about the original Howard movie that the media would do everything in their power to kill it before it grows. Which is unfortunate because I think you are right in that now is the time to make a good Howard project.

I have seen that Bullpen Bulletins you are talking about with Star Wars. I must have read it in an issue of Iron Man or Luke Cage. Just classic bit of nostalgia there.

Regarding buying rights, I have looked into buying the rights of a favorite forgotten 80s property of mine... no luck yet, but still trying to track them down. And yes, Larry Flynt is still alive. Oh, and the ballplayer you're talking about is "Spaceman" Bill Lee.

Also, sorry for my fellow South Carolinians not downloading the show more... I can only do so much! Although Adam is back in South Carolina now, at least.

Chris, that new avatar is, as Dusty Rhodes would say, is Stylin' and Profilin'!

I think Dusty Rhodes was "Rockin and rollin', struttin' and strollin'". Could be wrong, though.

Doh!, I couldn't remember if it was Flair or not, and I should have. Flair is one of my favorite heels.
