Aren't all energy beings malevolent? That's like their thing, isn't it?
I don't know that I have ever seen Day Of The Dove. Sounds pretty crazy in the synopsis, one of those Cold War style eps which don't play out right in anything but TOS. Glad to hear that Bones has made an impression on Michael -- he's my favorite Star Trek character of all time so its good to hear another Bones fan. My take on it always was that Kirk was the Heart of the Enterprise, Spock was the Brains of the Enterprise, and then Bones was the Soul of the Enterprise. (And Scotty was the Engineer, ba-dum-dum-dum.) McCoy is the grounding force for Kirk when his emotions get the better of him, much like Spock is the grounding force for Kirk in matters of the mind. The represent the balance for Kirk, like Scott (I think) was saying on the episode.
Heh, thanks for putting the Star Trek V trailer on there. I actually like that one, warts and all.
Regarding the idea that ST:TMP is Decker and Ilia's story, eh, I think they are one of the stories. Kirk & Spock's story and V'ger's story are also front and center the entire time, and I would argue as being more important. V'ger serves as more than a simple Maguffin considering the philosphical nature of the character and is more than just a heavy like a lot of ST movie baddies. Moreso than even Khan in WoK, I think V'ger is the most important character in ST:TMP. But if you listened to the ST:TMP episode then you know I'm a V'ger mark so take that as you will.
If you guys had to recommend one "era" or run of comics to look for at a Con, what would it be? Never really read much in the way of ST comics personally. Also, good luck with the Warlord toys... they are not very easy to find in any sort of decent shape. They're pretty awesome, though.
The TNG episode, now this one I have seen. In fact the first thing I rented from Netflix when I joined in... 2003 I think... was the entire first season of TNG! The main thing I remember from this one is the pale-skinned Q/Data looking thing. Kind of your typical Q episode, right? Anyway as Riker is my favorite character in TNG, I like this episode because it's a Riker episode. And generally speaking if its an ep where Riker is front and center then I'm more than likely digging it. Its a typical sort of Trek story but that's the nature of the beast. And hell yes the planet looks like the planet where they met the Ferengi! They used that dang set over and over again!
As far as Roddenberry's vision of the future, I love how that vision includes flying through space in your pajamas. BTW, if you want to see Marina Sirtis mostly naked, check out Death Wish 3. Of course you should all watch Death Wish 3 anyway because its THE BEST FREAKING MOVIE EVAR. My pick is Gates McFadden just for that dropkick she throws in like season 6.
All I have to say about this episode is "Those aren't muskets!"
