Captain Bujold

Postby Bibliomike » Wed Jul 21, 2010 10:07 am

As much as I dislike "Star Trek: Voyager," I have always been curious to see Genevieve Bujold, first cast as Janeway, in the role. I didn't know any footage of her performance existed, but here it is:

Scroll down about 2/3rds, I think, to see her in a clip from "Caretaker." Hard to say, based on this -- which is largely special effects and technotalk dialogue -- whether she would have been an improvement on Mulgrew or not. Maybe Mulgrew got the idea for her fluttery hands from Bujold, based on Bujold's gesture near the top of the scene.

As for this blog post itself, you probably knew all 14 things anway. I have to admit, I didn't know Doohan had a hands double, though I knew about the missing finger.

Thanks for that link. I can't watch the video here at work but I did not know a lot of those 14 things. Some of them (like LaForge's visor being an air filter) are pretty common, but some of them were new to me.

Regarding the Borg being insects originally, from what I have read I think they would have been more similar to Species 8472 than the Xindi. Of course the irony there is that the Borg and 8472 had their own conflict. What is also funny is that the Borg are held in high regard now, but if you read in contemporary magazines (such as Cinefantastique) when they first showed up they were met with quite a bit of derision!

Dude I was in grammar school when the Borg debuted!

Anyways, I think that the main complaint heaped on the Borg at the time was that they were "cheap" Star Wars/Terminator/Mad Max knock-offs, and were not appropriate for Star Trek heavies. I haven't read those magazines in a number of years but I remember that criticism. In retrospect it seems pretty silly, doesn't it? But in the context of where TNG was at the time I guess a certain amount of skepticism is to be expected.

I was lucky enough to drift away from Voyager before it became the "Seven of Nine show featuring Voyager." Jeri Ryan is alright if you like blondes I guess.

The Borg were more fun on the show than they were in First Contact, where they are just out to screw with people it seems. Borg Queen not withstanding, the run-n-gun on the ship was a hoot. Plus I always loved the bit with The Doctor.
