Ask Mike a Question!

Postby Michael Bailey » Sun Dec 19, 2010 1:20 am

I had this on the old forum so I will get it going here. Ask me any question you have regarding comic books and I will read them on the air!

Comic book podcast? Okay...
Green Lantern comic book podcast? Better...
Green Lantern comic book podcast about the 1990's comic run with an emphasis on Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner? Now that's finding your niche!

I don't know your format so sorry if this is not within the scope of comic book questions you were looking to answer but here it goes. I have not read comics in a fairly long time but as a kid I was a reader of a few classics, mostly from Marvel but not exclusively. Over the years Saint Nick made a fly by or two and seems like quite a few holiday issues had him somewhere spreading the spirit of good will and peace on earth thus lifting the spirit of some dejected hero. Any idea how many appearances the jolly old elf has made in the mainstream comics?

Merry Christmas,

Hey Mike, regarding the Who's Who episode, and the concept that you could name any successful Post-Crisis character and find their namesake in Who's Who, I got some for you:

Icon
Rocket
Hardware
Static
Xombi

...

What do you think?

-Are you ever going to have Big Honkin Steve or Scott & Chris on to discuss Star Wars EU Comics?
-Ever consider doing an NCIS podcast? I love the show, and I know you do too.
-Do you recommend the George Reeves Adventures of Superman show? I heard the first season was great, but the quality declined in a Lois and Clark esque fashion.
-I plead with you to see the Smallville Episode 200, Homecoming. You get a glimpse of the future and see the iconic Clark and Lois. Tom Welling channeled all previous versions and exceeded all expectations. I would really like to hear your thoughts on it. Here is the highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UBAigPpMXQ
-Is it to early for Clark and Lois to get married on Smallville? Keep in mind they've known each other for over 6 years. And though it was logically the time for her to know the secret, doesn't it kinda bite we'll never get that "Lois, I'm Superman moment?" The "Lois, I'm the BLUR." was rather underwhelming.

This might be more "on topic" for FCTC but do you remember any rumors regarding a possible appearance of Death back in "Aventures of Superman" #500?

Hey Mike. I just finished up watching Superman/Batman: Apocolypse and really enjoyed it. Granted, I haven't seen Superman/Batman: Public Enemies yet (get it on streaming soon, Netflix!), so I don't know how this one holds up. But in my opinion, it is one of the best DCAU direct to DVD movies they have put out. And the fact that they brought back all of the voices of the main cast (aside from Darkseid, Barda, and Kara) made it that much better. My one question involves the character of Lyla/Harbinger. Since I just finished reading the trade of Crisis on Infinite Earths (yes, I'm about 25 years late), I knew she played an important part of that story and in the end she decided to wander the Earth with Pariah. What I was wondering was how she came to be a denizen of Themyscira, or if that was just something they shoehorned into the movie? It seemed like an odd character to be in the movie. Anyhow, I can't wait for Nothing But the Nineties, and I hope that you and your wife have a great New Year.

Joe -- And is it wrong to pause the stream to see if there is a nudie shot of Kara when she first lands in Gotham? :D -- Anthrax

Seems that I'm going to be picking your brain for a good long time, Mike. This question revolves around a possible Spider-Man villan. My four year old nephew is a huge Spider-Man fan, and recently at his birthday party my in-laws had for him, he had some Spider-Man cardboard cutouts of certain characters decorating the table where we ate. Two of them were really obvious villans (Venom and Scorpion), but one had me scratching my head. He was wearing a black bodysuit with a purple cape. He had claw like gloves like the ones Azrael wore in the Knightfall series, and to top it off he had a mask that looked like what Spawn would wear. I know this is a horrible mish-mash of comic book characters as references, but for the life of me, I can't figure out who this might have been. I thought it might be Mysterio, but I didn't think he ever lost the fishbowl. Could this actually be a Spawn character that they slipped into a Spider-Man birthday pack? Even doing Google image searches weren't helpful...

Joe -- Help me Michael R. Bailey, you're my only hope... :D -- Anthrax

Mike, thanks for answering my question. My thoughts about the Milestone characters was that McDuffie and company was that they set out specifically to create new characters who were not legacy characters or otherwise rehashes of what had come before. That motivation has got to be one of the driving forces behnd the staunch loyalty to these characters. I was not suggesting that they were runaway successes, but they certainly are well known amongst comics fans and managed to hold down titles for several years. Static is definitely the biggest star of the bunch, even though Icon is my favorite of the group.

Thanks again!

I don't want to come off as a jerk or anything but I set this thread up for people to ask questions to be read on the show. I probably didn't make that clear when I set this thread up so if y'all would not answer the questions and let me do so "on the air" I would appreciate that.

Would you spend a few minutes discussing super powers? i.e. When do they “work right” as storytelling devices, when don’t they? What are the most interesting super powers and why? Any truly memorable or creative super powers you’ve seen created in, say, your lifetime? Any favorite occasions when familiar powers were put to especially entertaining use? And from an entertainment value standpoint, which character has the best powers, and why?

If you had the powers of Superboy Prime what would you be doing with them?
