Mass Effect 3 (Spoilers)

Postby PSB » Fri Mar 23, 2012 7:02 am

I love this series of games, and despite the last five minutes of the game, Mass Effect 3 was awesome. Now, while I'm not about to petition Bioware to change the ending (it's their vision after all) or call for someones head on a platter like some folks are doing, I can understand why people are upset. Just like Battlestar Galactica, Lost, and the Matrix Trilogy, everything was going great until omnipotent string-pullers got involved. Also, this idea of cosmic cycles is getting really old. Plus, it would seem odd that with so much money to be made still on this franchise, that Bioware would choose such a drastic way of changing this really rich and wonderful universe.

Still, 99% of the game was awesome and I really felt it when some character died. The intensity of the Earth campaign was amazing. I'm looking forward to taking my other Shepherds and their various decisions from the previous games through this one.

I haven't played ME3, I'm not a really big fan of the ME games, but it is funny how some gamers feel they have a right to a change the creative vision of a storyteller because they're not happy (however this Chip-In launched to do this will raise $80,000, so I suppose it's a good thing in a way). On a side note, I had no problem with the ending to Battlestar Galactica and I'm always slightly curious why people didn't like it.

I've not finished ME3 yet (I'm only about 16 hours into it) but I love it. I keep hearing about this ending and while I have ideas about what it could be, I'm not worried about getting to it because I'm having so much fun in the game. Once I do finish up with this run through, I'm going to do the same thing Paul is doing and taking my other Shepards through it with their insane decisions.

My ME process is this:

1st Playthrough - No spoiler with a lean towards Paragon decisions. Unfortunate, side effect are things like Wrex dying in ME1 or losing the entire NPC Cerberus crew on the Normandy to the Collectors in ME2, but those shocking surprises are part of the fun.

2nd Playthrough - Probably my favorite Shepherd, 'cause she's a badass sniper, but also I know what's coming and I can craft the story a little more to my liking.

3rd Playthrough - Renegade! Kill everything! Burn Rachni Queen! Burn! How many people can I get killed on the suicide mission?

Any other additional playthroughs are just to have fun with the other character classes, since the gameplay action can be totally different due their make up and powers.

Ha! I play a more renegade approach already and this is my first time through ME3. I do try and think of the "larger" impact of my decisions on the war, but some times people (aliens) have to die. I mean I got the entire race destroyed because I thought another one would be more effective in the war. :)
