Alpha (aka Spiderman's sidekick). What about Spidergirl?

Postby Zero » Fri Aug 31, 2012 11:51 pm

I felt Marvel dropped the ball creating a sidekick for Spiderman, when they already had one to go in Spidergirl. Aren't most of the comic companies trying to get new readers more to the point female readers. One of the major areas Marvel and DC are lacking are the female super heroes. A Spiderman and Spidergirl series could have been that jumping on point for female readers. Marvel had the chance to progress Spiderman by giving him a "daughter" without having him married or in a serious relationship. Don't most long time Spidey fans want to see Peter Parker grow as adult and not regress to his teenage years.

Instead we get Alpha, (sigh) which I am getting a Jason Todd vibe from the character and that is not a good thing. I understand Marvel is giving Spiderman a young hero with all the power but no sense of responsibility. Maybe down the road this might develop into something. However, my spider sense is telling me even if this character gets a negative reaction Marvel is going shove the character down our throats much like they did with the Sentry.

Only time will tell. ;)

I totally agree. I loved reading the last Spider-Girl comic with Arana. She was awesome and the comic was really enjoyable. I would have loved reading her as Spider-Man's sidekick. They did it a little bit in her title in the early issues where Spider-Man kinda helped her a bit and was trying to mentor a little in that battle (my memory might be shaky on that). She was a great character that could have wanted to learn from Spider-Man.

I'm not sure about this Alpha character. The name alone reeks of the character being pretentious and self important. Just an annoying brat who thinks too highly of himself (his look gives that feel also). I agree on the Jason Todd vibe (the one fans voted to kill off, not the awesome Red Hood version of him out there now).

Maybe the idea is that this Alpha is like that and he gets knocked down a peg or two, and we grow to love him as a character. But so far the signs are not great.

Hell, I would rather see Hope from X-Men be Spider-Man's sidekick over this new character. It was working really well in the New Avengers book.

Time will certainly tell on this decision.

Does Sony hold the movie rights to Spidergirl? Maybe Marvel created Alpha to avoid giving them more film ideas.
