A Question for us geeks....

Postby the chuck » Wed Jul 11, 2012 3:30 pm

Here is a question I've thought of while at work. If your collection (comics, sketches, art, action figures) were destroyed or stolen, heaven forbid. Lets say you were insured for the collection, but its not enough to buy back the entire collection. What would you do? Would you give up, focus on one thing, buy back what you could and rebuild the Empire? Lets see what everyone would do.

I think I would focus on one thing and collect that.

A Question for us geeks....

Postby mythmakingetc » Wed Jul 11, 2012 3:56 pm

My only real collection at this point is comics and I've sold stuff over the years so it's not huge. I think I'd start over, but maybe pick and choose the most important stuff. Some stuff I might not replace until if and when I felt like reading them again.

I have no idea what I'd do. So much of what I have could easily be replaced but man. I think I'd end up basically replacing most of what I could. The toys, trades, legos and most of it could easily be replaced but some of the original art and pages and my star wars autographs, gaaahhh..I'd be bummed over those. I really have no idea what I'd do exactly :(

I barely have any comics and I dont have any art so that wouldn't be a problem. Most of my toys are star wars then MOTUC, then sports, then everything else like Joe, wrestling and Voltron. So I'd try to replace my MOTUC first and then try to get back my other stuff as well, but most of my star wars I wouldn't pursue

I'd replace the few items that had strong sentimental attachment for me, and just start over.

Actually that is exactly what I did when my ex-wife took my remaining comics at the time (various books 1975-1998), toys (a few original 80's Joes and a couple x-men figures from 90's) and CCG's (Magic original sets and some from Beta, Decipher Star Wars, etc). When we split all of this stuff "disappeared" and I just gave up trying to get it back. I replaced the few comics I could that held sentimental value, bought trades containing others, chalked the rest up to a lesson learned and started anew.
This is also part of the reason I'm buying a lot of digital now. Only the books that the collector in me must have are the ones I buy in print (GI Joe: RAH, Justice League for example), while the rest I buy digitally (Cobra, Firestorm, Witchblade, etc). If I lose everything again, atleast I still have the digital.

Masters of the Universe. It's the one thing I've been collecting since 2002. Although I'd probably collect MOTUC if I had to start from scratch.

the only things I collect are comics, transformer toys, and GI Joe's. The only thing I don't think I could replace would be my GI Joe customs, which makes up a quarter of the Joe collection.
I lost over 1000 comics a few years ago in a flood, and managed to buy back a large majority of them either in single issues or in trade paperback. One year for my birthday, my wife bought me the entire Marvel Punisher run, which had been destroyed. I didn't have flood insurance or a personal articles policy taken out on the collection, so the insurance company was useless.

Comics I would just let go and move on from that point and get trades of the stuff I really want. Trades and Hardcovers I would try to recollect. The only figures I would rebuy would be the ones I know I'll display. Last would be the statues and would replace them all.

I would let my comic collection go. I just wouldn't have the heart to go through rebuilding it.

This is a good, sobering question. I have a full run of Uncanny X-men, and the wife and I had a blast collecting it. So, I'd rebuild that. All of my original art, I'd just cry over and move on. As for my trades and other comics, I'd recollect them as I wanted to re-read them. I may or may not try to re-collect Punisher.

BTW, how have you guys gone about insuring your collection? I'm thinking of doing a separate schedule on my home owner's insurance once I buy my house next year.
