Horny teenagers. Police brutality. A waitress that is light on her feet. Wino sluts banging punky mermen. A smooth-talking honky with a butt-cut. A red-faced Nazi spewing hatespeech to a mystical Jewish powerhouse. And that's all the craziness that I can come up with from this issue off the top of my head...
...or Xavier's.
The story has me completely intrigued. Wanda and Red Skull have a great history and Remender's handling of their interaction was superb. I dig the contrast of Nazi using Jewish mutant to try to take out another minority. Disgusting, but so are most of Red Skull's plans. I want to know more about the group of mutants(?) that he has working for him. I suspect that some are just newly-minted mutants and hate what they've become and so would be willing to join up with such a hatemonger.
Still not completely understanding the fierce animosity between Rogue and Wanda, but I'm sure that this will come to fruition with these two becoming close friends and teaming up pretty well. At least, I hope so. I want to see some crazy Rogue chaos magic. Then again, this may just continue to be a source of tension for the team, which Remender is fond of drawing out.
The art, I am not sold on. I like the designs of the new mutants on Red Skull's side of things and the general look of the X-Vengers, but am I the only one who thinks that they all have dead eyes? This is something that just seems to come with Cassaday art, but the character with the most expression in their eyes in the entire issue was the water chick...and she didn't even have pupils. This actually works with Red Skull because it seems creepier to not be able to tell what he is emoting. Just a wicked grin and piercing tiny eyes.
Anyway, I loved the first issue and have decided to invest my time and money into following this series. The second issue did not disappoint and moved the story along without providing much action. I can only imagine how long this arc will take, but I am still interested in where it's going. Remender is a master of the long story and I assume this will be no different. As long as the team doesn't visit Otherworld and add Captain Britain to the team, I am on board for the long haul.
