State of the X-verse

Postby resha » Mon Apr 09, 2012 10:41 pm

I know that Rob and Brian and down on the X-books currently but I was wondering what everyone else was thinking. I'm actually really enjoying most of the X related books right now. I didn't know if it is just me or are there others who agree.

This is general could change issue to issue:

Buy : Uncanny X-Force, X-Men Legacy, Wolverine and the X-men
Borrow: X-Factor, Astonishing X-Men, X-Men
Pass: Wolverine, New Mutants, Uncanny X-Men.

So even across the board. The problem is the flagship title is the worst of the bunch.

Well let's see:
Uncanny: Borrow Pass when Greg Land is drawing
WATXM: Buy
Adjectiveless: Pass
New Mutants: Borrow
Astonishing: Borrow
Legacy: Borrow
X-Force: Borrow with current arc but overall Buy
X-Factor: Borrow
Wolverine: Pass
Overall: Borrow

We're in a mediocre era of X-men to me and I'm being nice on some of those Borrows.

But that's cool your enjoying them all resha because everyone has different taste.

I went on a 10 year hiatus from reading any x-books and just started back reading them pre schism so maybe I'm just easy to please.

Main problem IMO is that there's just too many X titles to keep up with. X-Force has consistently been the best for me for the last few years

Buy: Wolverine & the X-Men, Uncanny X-Force
Borrow: X-Men, Uncanny X-Men

I don't read the rest, apart from Wolverine. I picked up the most recent Astonishing because it was Liu's 1st issue, but haven't read it yet. Overall, I don't think the X-Men are in a bad place, just a mediocre place. But I think it's a mediocrity brought on by having so many titles and so many cooks in the kitchen. The same thing's going on with the Batman comics right now, for the same reason.

For me, I guess I don't really know...I'm just coming back, so it's all kinda cool, but I can see the reasons for some being upset. So much stuff has changed since I was reading regularly....we don't even have prof.x at the freaking mansion anymore for starters.....

On a side note----who has some great recommendations out of stuff over the last year thats been released? Whats the best of 2011 and current 2012 for X-Men? I'm reading Schism right now....on issue 2.

Thanks in advance!

Wolverine and the X-Men is awesome- but you need to know going in that the tone is far different from any X-Book you've ever read in the past.

Uncanny X-Force #1-18 is the best X-Comic since at least Mutant Massacre and one of the best arcs ever. If you read nothing else- read that.

You have to be into quirky humor in a comic and a book that doesn't take it self to seriously. it's very fun book is the best way to describe it. It's crazy and I could see some people being put off by it though. Like Brian and Rob said that if it was the only Xbook I'd have a problem with it but it's something totally different and that's what makes it refreshing.

Let me preface this by saying "I don't care too much about continuity. I don't feel the need or desire to read every single X book. I follow creators, not characters."

I actually think the X books are the best they've been since Rob and Brian started the show. To be fair though, I don't read every single title. X-Factor, Wolverine and the X-Men, and X-Force are my three favorites. I think each of those books has a unique tone. I think Abnett and Lanning are really hitting their stride with New Mutants. It's been a lot of fun. I think Rob and Brian are too attached to the old continuity to enjoy this one. That's totally understandable. I recently read all of Gage's Legacy stuff. I enjoyed it much more than Carey's final issues. So that's five books I'm really enjoying on a consistent basis. It's rare that I read 5 X books.

I'm not looking forward to AvX though. I kind of grew out of the event stuff. I could care less. Hopefully it doesn't interfere too much with the stuff I'm enjoying.

I wasn't looking forward to AVX either but issue #1 was quite an enjoyable read. A lot better than I imagined it was going to be
