Favorite Renditions (artist/writer) of X-Characters

One of the things I love about the podcast is that the hosts all started reading the X books at different points. I think the same is probably true of the forum. So, which creators defined our favorite characters for us? In other words, pick 5 or 10 of your favorite (or any) X characters and name the artist and writer who created your favorite version of the character. The artist and writer didn't have to work on the character at the same time. For example, you may love the look of Jim Lee's Logan, but you prefer Wolverine when Jason Aaron writes the series.

Here's my list:

Character...Artist/Writer
1) Nightcrawler...Alan Davis/Warren Ellis
2) Wolverine...Adam Kubert/Larry Hama
3) Cyclops...Paul Smith/Matt Fraction
4) Storm...Barry Windsor Smith/Chris Claremont*
5) Rogue...Chris Bachalo/Mike Carey
6) Longshot...Art Adams/Peter David
7) Rachel/Phoenix II...Chris Bachalo/Chris Claremont*
8) Jamie Madrox...David Yardin/Peter David
9) Dazzler...Marc Silvestri/Chris Claremont*
10) Psylocke...Jim Lee/Alan Moore

Random Notes:

*In all of Chris Claremont's cases I'm referring to old-school Claremont; not the Claremont who came back for a second run.

I have 50% creative teams that worked together and 50% creative teams that never worked on the character together (or at least together on the versions I'm referring to).

Considering how forgetful Matt Fraction's run was, I was really surprised I picked him for anything. That run did establish the modern Cyclops though. I kind of enjoy the "leader of his people" Cyclops more than any previous version of the character.

I also think that after Warren Ellis--who had a highly underrated run on Excalibur--writers forgot how to write Nightcrawler. Even before the character was killed, he became the one-note religious guy.

Alan Moore's Psylocke was a very different character than the one Jim Lee drew. Still, I'd love to see some of that old-school characterization on ninja-Psylocke.

Well, off the top of my head, the Layman/Jeanty Gambit comic series 4 is "my" Gambit...

This is a cool topic, Phillies64. I hope Briscoe visits the forum so he can tell us which creative team he prefers for Mammomax!

I can't see many people disagreeing with your Silvestri/Claremont on Dazzler pick. Warlock by Sienkiewicz/Claremont strikes me as another near-universal pick. Frequently featured characters such as Cyclops, Wolverine, and Storm will probably have a wide array of answers for favourite artist.

my favourite iteration of Beast would be...
well...
when Robert Kirkman wrote Science Dog with Cory Walker. i know, it's not the Technically the same character, or even the same publisher...
But tell me Science Dog isn't some of the best Hank McCoy material.

then of course, straczynski and coipel get thor
brubaker and epting get captain america
fraction and aja get iron fist and hawkeye
bendis and maleev gave me my favourite daredevil
but...

if we're sticking x-characters only

Wolverine is definitely Jason Aaron and Phil Noto
X-23 goes to Marjorie Liu and Phil Noto
Jubilee goes to Kathryn Immonen and Phil Noto
trend? what?
Storm is clearly Chris Claremont and John Byrne (maybe David Yardin?)
with a lot of other characters, it gets tough.

Cyclops would be Joss Whedon/Jim Lee
Wolverine Chris Claremont/John Cassaday
I'll post more soon.

Well as Colossus has such a stupendous writing history, this ought to be quite the list. *snort*

Whedon is as clear as a mormon's tinkle.
As far as artist, I love what Leinil Yu did in his brief foray.
And of course the Bachalo covers on Bloodline. Sav Larocca and Greg Land are pleasing too.
Hell, I just love anytime the suave steel swain is on the page.

What is it you all read comics for more, the art or writing?
