After seeing the leaked trailer for the American remake, I decided to watch the Swedish version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It wasn't a bad adaptation of the book, but it wasn't perfect either.
A lot of the actors playing the roles didn't feel right at all--chief being the 82 year-old Henrik Vanger, the man who starts the whole investigation, looking not a day over 50.
I also found the way that they handled the violence aspect of the movie to be really weird and ass-backwards--you're telling me that the filmmakers are okay with showing several instances of brutal rape and sexual assault, and yet has to cut away when Lisabeth is punching a dude when she's being mugged?
And this may not be the fault of the filmmakers, but the version I got from On-Demand was dubbed, and...it definitely wasn't the best dubbing I've heard in a while.
Finally, it was just edited weirdly...I'd say at least a third of the scenes were just crudely cut to the next because they couldn't figure out how to end it right.
I don't want to sound like I'm completely bashing the movie--most of the cast does a pretty good job with their role, the scenes look great, pegging the tone pretty well, and they did a decent job adapting the huge beast of a novel into a concise 2 & 1/2 hour movie. But, after seeing it, I'm now even more eager to see how David Fincher will adapt the novel.
