Movies or Comics?

Postby Adam » Wed Jun 30, 2010 10:28 am

I know a lot of people on the board are movie and comics fan but what is your first love. I honestly have to say that as much as I love comics I am a huge movie geek and If I would have to choose I would give away my comics in a heartbeat. There is just something more that I get out of a good film. What about you?

I would say my first love was movies. I love watching movies to point where I don't really watch TV shows at all. I would rather watch a good movie then watch a TV show. I think that's why I get most of my shows on DVD, then it seems like a really long movie. But, now my love is more on the comic side. My passion is more focused on that.

I'd throw myself on my sword before I would allow myself to make that decision.

Movies. They infiltrated my life before comics, so they have had more opportunities to influence me.

I don't read comics much, I get the occasional TPB from the library and listen to podcasts about comics, but really don't read that many, so movies for me, no question.

Comics first. Although probably more movies lately. I think I share my time between music, art, TV, movies, and comics. Yes, I just can't commit and cheat on all my "loves" with another one.

I must go with comics.

I have appreciation for both, but in the end what matters to me the most is the pacing of the story. Some stories are told better through movies; directors provide the pacing for you because they simply know how to tell the story better in that limited time frame.

But when it comes to comics, the freedom you have with the pages is what gives you a deeper connection to the story. Think of all the story arcs that have completely caught you off-guard, had you yell "WTF??" in a public setting, and made you flip back five or six pages just to make sure you read it right. Realistically, a time you turned the page and was transfixed for several minutes, whether it be the writing, the energy, or the art that struck you. There are so many variables between the panels that every reader can have a different experience, and everyone can get something different form it. You can argue that same point with movies, but at the same time the director's motives of creating mood, opinion and point of view can often be overbearing. Comics deal with abstract thoughts better than most mediums as well, you have visuals AND words at your disposal in any format and progression you could conceive. The spectrum of storytelling is limitless.

But yeah... comics.

I swear I'm not trying to debate! This is PURELY to explain why I prefer comics to movies, nothing else. It won't hurt to say that I DO absolutely LOVE movies, just that I love obsessively talking about comics...I'm new to posting on forums, by the way... how much is too much??? Probably a few paragraphs ago, but... geeks! :D

A rant every now and then is good, man. No worries.

It's a very tough choice, but I think movies edge out comics for me. Books beat them both out, due to the deeper connection you can get, but that's a different topic. While I love both comics and movies, I tend to get more enjoyment out of a good movie than I do a good comic. Except, of course, when it comes to movies based on comic properties.
