HHW Episode 194 Talkback

Postby Brad » Mon Oct 25, 2010 10:22 am

This week the guys go to Star Trek Fan Days in Plano, Texas and stalk actor/singer/celebrity spokesperson William Shatner. They do some other stuff too, but the William Shatner Q&A takes up most of the show. Did you know Shatner was on a TV show called T.J. Hooker and the show had nothing to do with fishing? Shatner’s last name also sounds like the past tense of pooping.

That may be the most sarcastic summary you guys have ever done. I'm intrigued. :)

He was a lot more interesting to listen to than I thought he would be. When they cut him off for the closing of the panel he really didn't seem like he wanted to go.

It was great fun hanging with everyone for the day.

Ok I am so jealous of Brad, not only did you get to ask Shatner a question, and made a funny joke that probably got more laughs then '$@%! my dad says'. Nice episode guys, you really make the cons shows interesting.

I loved the part where Shatner explain how a sitcom works.

"You see, there's a 'fourth wall' and I 'pretend' to be a 'character.'"

Obvious, he thinks he's the first person to figure out this concept. And it's great.

Fan Days was a blast! It was good to meet Frank, Brad Bill and Russ. The show was decent. Needed a few more comic book dealers, but all in all not bad. I picked up a few books and chatted with a few interesting people.

One of the highlights was talking with Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes. Those two just cut up and joked and has a good time. It was too bad that Micheal Dorn was in the dealer room away from them. I think it would have been good to have all three side by side cutting up.

Meeting Shatner was cool, but his handlers were kind of jerks. They just pushed people around and through where it was hard to have any real contact with him. Meeting Christopher Lloyd was cool too. He is a very soft spoken humble guy. Kind of not what I expected.

There were several interesting displays and people all around. It was better than the Richardson con by far, but I think they have a ways to go to be as good as Wizard Worlds or actual Comic Cons.

Here are a few pics from the con:

I had a great time with my son on Saturday and with my wife and son on Sunday. Each day we only spent about 90 minutes there, but that was enough and worth it. Great meeting up with everyone on Saturday night. Hope to meet up again for Wizard World Austin.

Alex and I got there a little after 11:00 on Saturday. We got in by 11:30 or so. Light rain while we waited in line, but not bad. Alex was in a stroller the whole time, so he had a canopy while I took one for the team. Alex knows nothing about Star Trek or Star Wars, so he didn't know what to make of the costumers. He called the armored Star Wars guys "robots" and had no idea what to make of Klingons. Just kept asking "Who's that guy?" Pretty funny. He'll be an expert a year from now. Never let him out of the stroller, which was a good idea since it was so crowded. Picked up some Speed Racer toys for him, a couple OK for his age, and a few I'll be, uh, "saving" for him for when he gets older. Left for lunch and to hang out with my dad and sis.

Steph was out for a baby shower, but the three of us went back at 11am Sunday. Much less crowded, which was fine by me. Alex could walk about now, and he really liked it. Fortunately he didn't get into trouble, but I did. Bought a carded McQuarrie Boba Fett, a loose McQuarry R2-D2 and a loose 2010 mail-away Boba Fett complete with choke hazard. $55 total, but not too bad. I don't tend to buy anything at cons, but this was too tempting and not crazy money. Alex got yet more Speed Racer stuff, this time a Mach 5 bowl for his cereal for $2. He also got a free Galactic Hero Darth Vader from the dealer I bought all the figures from. Alex thought the removable helmet was hilarious. Saw the last 30 minutes of the Star Trek Next Gen panel. Never been to a panel before, but that was a lot of fun. I'll have to look out for those again. Left the con for lunch again.

I was looking for some stuff to sign (never went to the autograph room) and something for Shawn Pryor and Bill, and I found two diecast Mach 5's that I vaguely remember buying a few years ago. Also found a Yamato and Yellow Submarine re-issue. Found a carded Luke X-Wing pilot on an "Empire" card which I picked up from KMart and never opened. (Still don't have an Xwing.) It was almost like having a mini con in my old room.

I might get something signed at Wizard World Austin. I regret not meeting Christopher Lloyd, who I don't think was there Sunday. I'm thinking of meeting Adam West. Not sure. I have plenty of Batmobile stuff, but I think I will either see if Danielle Corsetto can do a quick sketch for me or if I should blow up a shot of the Batmobile I took when it was in Austin.

We'll have to do it again...

Nice haul, Chubtoad! I had a Back 2 the Future Delorean model for Christopher Lloyd to sign. Got it as a gift and never opened it. Had no idea the plastic body was made to look like stainless steel. I was going to pull the trigger on Sunday but I don't think he was there.

I read that they filmed an episode of "Cheaters" at the con and started a fist fight. lol...

So oddly enough, this episode contained the first of TWO Bernie Goetz references I heard yesterday(the other was in a new Venture Bros commentary)

Anyway, great episode. I was surprised how cogent Shatner seemed to be(at least in the Q+A portion).

I thought that the monologue portion though revealed a lot about the problems with his current career choices though. People don't tell him no. Yeah, I know, he was playing it up, but still, the whole concept of the people surrounding him being yes-men who tell him every idea he has is great explains so much.

I didn't see the Shatner panel coming, and when it played over my iPod it was glorious. Brought a smile to my face.

Thanks for this episode, guys. You did a great job. :)

Thanks for all the positive feedback, people! Frank said to me last night, "I think we should give the con shows a rest. They aren't really any good. How often can we talk to people about their costumes and it not get old?"

Kind of as a tangent to this...will HHW/LOD or any other guys on the boards from Tx going to the WW Austin show? I'm kind of on the fence about this, but I might be more interested if there was a meet-up. A couple of my buddies wanted to go, but backed out...so, I'm kind of in that "meh" state.
See you in another life, brother!
