Synopsis of #1

Prologue of a "whistleblower" getting murdered by unknown people

Cut to Pete Wisdom (MI-13) and Steve Rogers having lunch - The grandson of Dr Erskine has recreated the super-soldier formula and is going to sell it to the highest bidder. The grandson took his mother's maiden name recently. She meet Tyler Paxton (another candidate for the super-soldier formula with Steve Rogers) and married him. Their son turned out to be a genius recruited by both SHIELD and MI-13. Dr Erskine works for Nextin Pharma

Rogers ends up in Madripoor and breaks into a high rise hotel hosting the Nextin Pharma shareholders - he spots Erskine, but he's with a woman he knew during WWII and she hasn't aged at all. Looks like an old lover.

Rogers tracks down Erskine to his office - he is confronted by three bodyguards on the formula - apparently it's not quite perfected yet.

He talks to Erskine and he says his motives are to find a cure for cancer with the super-soldier formula. As he talks, he is assassinated by a snipers bullet and another Dr Erskine dies in the hands of Steve Rogers.

I was a solid issue, but more setup at this stage in the game. The hanging questions are:

1. Who is that woman that Steve Rogers saw die 70 years ago? In a flashback panel, she looks like she was in the military.
2. Who is behind the death of Dr Erskine?
3. . . . and wants to get their hands on the formula?

Loved the issue. It was good to see Steve doing a little solo work.

With DCBS, I'm a month behind. I just received and read this yesterday. What a gorgeous book! When Eaglesham is on, the man is on!!

I liked seeing Steve as the super spy. A wink to 60s Bond and late 60s Cap stories. And it ended like the way Bru ended Cap #1 in 2005.

The brunette woman. Did I mention Eaglesham can draw some women?? I'm thinking the origin story in the back served several purposes. Part of it is filler like we've been getting with many Marvel books. Another part is to show the first origin story and educate. But every time I see that version with the woman in the old lady's mask who greets people at the front, I keep wondering about her background and that there is a story to be told there. They refer to her as X-13, a theme with Agent 13 later with Sharon (what was Peggy's number?). So I'm guessing the mysterious brunette from Steve's past was more than just the military love interest but maybe X-13 as well.

Who's behind the shooting? Probably the brunette acting in her spy capacity.

Who wants to get their hands on the formula? Who doesn't!!! That's why it is up for the highest bidder. But who's behind selling a formula that doesn't work? Maybe AIM? Modok?

Over all I really liked this mini. The ending left me wanting more. I guess it will spill over to Secret Avengers
