HHW Episode 180 Talkback

Postby Brad » Sun Jul 11, 2010 10:04 pm

Frank makes a huge mistake and asks Bill “The Voice” what he thinks of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Since both Brad and Frank have to suffer, they figured the listener should too.

I hate to be the bearer of elitist geek news* but "GIF" is pronounced "jiff"
()

Anyway, thanks for your discussion of TNG. I really enjoyed the episode because one of my oldest vivid memories comes from an episode of TNG.
But first, some backstory.

Bill, you mentioned that you were 19 when TNG premiered. Well I was also 19... days old. (sorry, I can't help but rub that in:P )
My dad watched TNG for almost all of it's run. I remember him watching the show every week.

But there was one specific episode I remember clearly from a young age. was the 5th episode of the 6th season (aired on 10/19/92, making me 5 years, one month, and ten days old when it aired. [sorry, I'm doing it again...])

That episode scared the ever loving piss out of me.

It is my earliest memory of fear. I stayed up almost all night building trains and stuff out of my Duplo bricks after that episode aired. My parents were smart enough to send me out of the room after they saw it was going to be a scary episode, but I think that actually made it worse as I never got to see the resolution.

But I also remember some of the other episodes you talked about from re-runs and such. It was a cool walk down memory lane. :)

*not really, I actually relish it, but I just don't want to come off like I do... Crap, that's ruined now :P

I don't care that the creator says it's supposed to be "jif." If that's the case, then the Gekko from Geico will now be called the Jekko fro Jeico, and I will jive and birthday jift.

Oh, and GIF as a format is horrible compared to PNG. Of course, they'd have your pronounce that PING, but it just works better for me to spell it, and say P N G. Yet I have no problem saying JPEG for jpg.

Ok, now I'll go actually listen to the episode.

Who from the Government Employees Insurance Company said its acronym was supposed to be pronounced with a "j" sound exactly? ;)

Edit: and don't you mean "jfeg?" :P

But then we should also pronounce it "JFEG", because the "P" in JPEG stands for "photographic".
(Sorry, I've just witnessed several debates on this recently and find it to be rather amusing)

Who's "she?" Anyway, I think I'm going to insist on calling them jfegs from now on, just to mess with people. :)

anyway, back on topic: Bill, if you could cut down TNG to the episodes you did think were worth it, how long would the series have run?

I meant "we". That's what happens when you post at work with one eye over your shoulder.

Back on topic. Bill's an idiot. TNG, while had some slow episodes, even the first 1, maybe 2, seasons, it rocked from Season 3 forward.

I take it back. Bill's not an idiot, he's just misguided. All the points you bring up are valid, but you're demonizing a seven year run by focusing on the early episodes when the writers have yet to find the characters' voices, learn to write to the actors, or establish this new universe and have establish any long running plot threads.

Frank briefly mentioned, but the Ferengi were meant to be the big bad of this new universe. Of course, the ended up being jokes, and the Borg were eventually introduced. I think the series benefited by how it finally worked out.

Bill I totally had your back on the Star Trek the Motion Picture theme. When Brad said that you were wrong I was yelling at him under my breath. Mainly because I was at work. :)

Bill's reaction was a great moment in the show though. :)

Bill, I also recently bought my wife an easreader but I got her the Kindle. I bought it two weeks before they lowered the price to $189 (in response to the Nook price reduction). I wrote an email to customer service at Amazon and in two hours they had processed a $70 refund. It can't hurt to ask right?

I am a geek, big time.

Never really been a Trek geek though.

I catch a TNG ep. here and there but not enough to tango with any real fan.

But this ep is full of Bill tangents so I am happy :)

Nice work boys.

Yeah, ST:TNG definitely got better after season 2, Wesley notwithstanding.

I watched it in college every week in a dorm room with some guys and a couple of geek girls. Good times...

I did not get on board with TOS until recently. TNG is close to my hear because it is when I first embraced the STU. I now understand the greatness of TOS but TNG will always be close to my heart.
