Wonder Woman #7 Discussion/Spoilers

Postby AdamC » Thu Mar 22, 2012 9:06 am

Did anyone read this comic? I thought it was a pretty cool issue. I like when a book can stand alone, but also connects with the rest of the series.

We met a few gods and we learned a bit about the amazons and Wonder Woman's family. It's odd, although the series seems to focus upon the Greek mythos, we're still learning a lot about the Amazons. I didn't realies how many answers we've gotten about the Amazon tribe in so little issues. It's very cool.

(Btw for those of you who are unaware of Eros and Hephaestus, it goes like this... Zues and Hera had a child named Hephaestus. He is the god of crafts, smithing, technology, metals etc. Hephaestus married Aphrodite, the goddess of love. They had a son named Eros, the god of love.)

I've stopped reading this monthly, but I'm evil and have decided to go digital for DC since everything gets reduced to $1.99 a month later. I did really like this book for the first six issues and really debated picking it up off the shelf this past Wednesday.

Oh it really was a good issue, with a slight patch of controversy in the eyes of some. :P

You know, I think these comics are even better if you know of Greek mythology. Everything is so carefully thought out, it's a shame that not everyone can enjoy it.

For example, it is said that Hephaestus was dispelled from Olympus because of his ugliness, and his feet were crippled and weak. Knowing that really adds to the outstanding character design.

The only thing that didn't make sense to me was that if wonder woman was an amazon, and grew up on paradise island, why didn't she know about what the amazons did? It seems weird that they would keep it from her, and wouldn't she notice twice the amount of pregnant women than actual babies?

I mostly enjoyed the issue--GREAT to see Chaing back on art, Eros and "the Smith" looked really cool, great dialogue and Diana trying to free the slaves was a great moment with a great tragic end.

That being said, I am a little torn about the Amazon reveal.

On one hand, I can't honestly say that I've always loved the Amazons as characters--what I mostly liked about them was the fact that they were a different culture for Diana to come from, and that's mostly it. Someone said it best on another forum in mock surprise that "you mean to tell me that an isolationist, war-based, theocratic monarchy with a twinge of xenophobia ISN'T a perfect utopia?" Not to mention there are some interesting theories that there might be more to the story than we're being let on right now.

On the other hand...I have to wonder if Azz went a little too far here.

Either way, I'm looking forward to next issue with Diana fighting her way through hell. With LOVE GUNS. :D

I love the idea of all of the new amazons having all of their birthdays within the same week or something lol. What are the chances?!
