Favourite X-story

Postby AdamC » Sun Mar 25, 2012 7:43 pm

Out of interest, what is everyone's favourite X-story? When you reply maybe provide a bit of information so anyone who hasn't read it can check it out (if it takes their fancy). :)

X-ecutioners Song, I think mostly because out of all the events, it has the closest similarities to the original animated series.
Its my favourite characters' universe. Your favourite characters just live in it.

Not really an arc, but most of it was collected in the From the Ashes trade: Uncanny X-Men #165 - 175. Those were the issues when Paul Smith was the regular artist on the book for a short time. I love the art and we got the end of the original Brood Saga, the introduction of Maddy Pryor, Rogue joining the X-Men, the introduction of the Morlocks, and the X-Men going to Japan. Great stuff.

Blinded by the Light by Mike Carey is my favourite X-Men story ever. For me, it is the end of his Adjectiveless run (although the Rogue's story is a big part of the climax of Messiah CompleX) but I think its pretty near perfect and it was great seeing Carey write other X-Men like Wolverine, Kitty etc rather than just the team he had been writing.

The scene with the click of Lady Mastermind's fingers and, "oh, that would be me" and then the reveal of the Marauders in the safe house with the X-Men is probably my wicked moment of the X-Men.

I love that everyone posted something different. I also love that I pretty much agree with everyone. These are all top notch stories in my humble opinion.

"Messiah Complex" was a great event and probably the most cinematic X-Men story in recent memory (or possibly ever).
"Fatal Attractions" has a number of individual moments that are permanently etched in my mind - Chuck standing up and taking seemingly decisive action against Magneto, Madrox killing Melloncamp, Wolverine popping his bone claws.
The main Madrox/Layla story running through X-Factor has many highlights and in some ways is hard to separate into individual stories. "The Invisible Woman Has Vanished!" might be the most succinct distillation of what is so good about that book.

But if I have to pick just one story to stand for the whole X-Saga, I'd say Whedon's "Astonishing X-Men" run is my favorite. It has so much of what is great about the X-Men and little of what isn't, it acknowledges the rich & deep history of the X-Men without being weighed down by it, and it has a great mix of action, humor, and character-building. About the only reservation I have about it is that the roster is fairly limited when you consider the whole host of folks who have worn the X. But even then, the tight and focused roster is ultimately one of the strengths of the story.
Wait - Rictor was his boyfriend's mother's obstetrician?!?

after rogue joined, the first story where they head to japan for wolverine's wedding.
storm runs off with yukio while the x-men are drugged! rogue who was an outsider among outsiders (take that, hypocrisy!) teams up with a reluctant wolverine to fight ninja and ultimately wolverine and the silver samurai square off in a brilliantly choreographed silent 3 page battle! the story ends with wolverine's wedding where madelyne realizes her new boyfriend has some interesting friends, storm arrives sporting a new punk look, and mariko calls off the wedding telling her fiance he isn't worthy! AW SNAP!!! Welcome to the X-Men, Rogue.

runner-up:
Generation X #4 was a fun introduction to the Generation X kids. Jubilee, Synch and Skin, Husk and Chamber... M, Banshee and Emma... Penance... this book had so much potential it was nuts.
