I was shocked at how crazy the store I go to normally was. It was insane. When I came back 4 hours after I had left originally to pick up the new TMNT hardcover volume 2 they still had a line going out the door. I understand now why they pimp the hell out of it.

I got to our one shop of York comics with my 11 year old nephew at about 9:45. We were about 10th in line. They had writer Marc Sumerak there, who is local and has done some stuff for Marvel. We were in and out there, but they are great for letting you take one of everything.

Then we went to Carol & John's Comic Shop. They were on the news the night before and had a midnight release party. They were packed. They had an artist the night before (which I didn't go to), but he wasn't coming during the day until 3pm, which was kind of ridiculous to me. There was nothing to keep you there until then. They had a 10% sale on trades (meh) and a 50% sale on back issues (that was good). I did get my nephew the Megaman trades because he seemed to love the FCBD issue of that.

Overall it was a great day, and I have read a few issues already from the haul.

The shop where I keep my pull list (Velocity Comics) is right by VCU. President Obama was on campus yesterday for some kind of campaign event. The guys at the store were worried about people being able to get to the shop, so they extended FCBD to include today and 25% off everything in the store. They also offered store credit for people that paid for parking yesterday in the nearby deck since traffic was so bad.

Just another reason we shop there...

I had totally forgotten it was Free Comic Day until I stopped into my LCS and saw the radio station broadcasting live out front. I was too late for any of the free comics, but I was able to take a large chunk out of my pull box taking home $300.00 worth of comics...the shop was selling all comics for half price, so I only spent $150.00.

My main shop had me scratching my head. Nice selection ofthe FCBD comics, but only allowing people to take 3 comics, period. What gets me is usually there would be something like a spend "X" dollars and get 3 more, or spend "X" dollars and get 'em all. But they didn't do that this year and I don't see why not. It seems like a good incentive to try and get people to spend some money while they're there.

Also, the shop is running a back issue sale of 25% off, but if you pull 50 or more comics you get 50% off. 50% off back issues is sweet, but they're running the sale this week. Why not run it on FCBD when you have more people coming into the shop? You have them there now, try to sell them on some stuff. Heck, the run the same sale again the following week to try and get them to come back again.

I know that retail is tough, and some comic shops are really struggling now. But it seems like there was a big missed opportunity here. Its not like you're going to make any money by keeping comics in the boxes.

Just my thoughts.

I hear you Sandman, our local LCS had 25% off everything but trading cards. The other, better comic store only had 10% off. Makes me wonder why?

My LCS was the same...3 book limit. I got 4 and they didn't bust my chops about it, but that might be because i'm a regular customer and shop there once a week or so and the owner knows me on site. They had a couple of people standing next to the Free books and they kept saying only 3 books please(I heard it after i had my 4 and was about to walk away)

I've never heard of a retailer limiting the number of free comics a person can take. That blows my mind! I could see allowing one of each, but to limit them to three total? Crazyness!!
